Encapsulation and Dehumidifier Installation

Nick C. Case Study

Dry Otter Waterproofing was happy to help this customer out of Rock Hill, South Carolina. Concerned about moisture found in their crawl space, they called Dry Otter Waterproofing to come inspect for a potential encapsulation.

A dirty and dark crawl space with mold. Insulation and debris are covering the floor of the crawl space.

Upon our inspection, we were able to locate multiple spots of mold, dampened wood, and mildew within the crawl space. An encapsulation and dehumidifier installation was the recommended solution for this specific crawl space.

When crews arrived to waterproof the crawl space, the current insulation as well as other debris were disposed of. A whopping 20+ industrial-sized trash bags were filled to the brim and discarded. Next, to treat the issue of mold and mildew, our crew treated the entire crawl space with our proprietary cleaning solution that targets mold and mildew- eradicating it from the area.

After the mold and mildew were treated, the crew began sealing the crawl space vents with thick foam and caulk. This minimizes the risk of moisture finding its way back under the home. Following the vent sealing, the crew began to lay drainage matting across the entirety of the crawl space. Drainage matting is used to direct water in desired locations in lieu of puddling or pooling- potentially creating damage down the road.

After the drainage matting is installed, the longer process of installing vinyl sheeting begins for the crew. Installing the vinyl sheeting takes multitasking and great syncopation between crew members. As a crew member began laying down the sheeting on the crawl space floor, another crew member began covering the piers (the columns that hold up the home throughout the crawl space). In addition, the third crew member begins installing the vinyl sheeting on the walls. As the vinyl installation comes to a close, the final steps take place.

Tape is used to seal the seams of the vinyl sheeting- leaving no cracks to let in moisture. As the taping process began to wrap up, two crew members worked on installing an AprilAire dehumidifier to help the space remain nice and dry.

The crew finished taping, the dehumidifier began running smoothly, and the debris was cleaned- leaving a nice white crawl space behind. The crew left knowing that the happy customer was well on their way to breathing healthier air in their home.
